Parents’ Awareness of Cyberbullying

Abstract

|
Obectives: Although cyberbullying is becoming a more prevalent form of school-based violence, it is not clear whether parents are aware of how their children’s smart phones and computers put them at risk. The purpose of this research was to explore the extent of parents’ awareness of cyberbullying and their efforts to stop it.
Methods: The researcher surveyed 531 parents of school-aged children in Jeollabuk-do.
Results: Only 29.8% of parents were aware that cyberbullying was happening at their children’s schools. Parents also had low awareness of the symptoms associated with both bullies and their victims.
Conclusions: It is important for parents to be digitally proficient, but this alone is not enough. Parents’ prevention efforts are perhaps the most important factor in stopping cyberbullying,
