Parents¡¯ Awareness of Cyberbullying
Hong Kyung-Sun

Abstract
Obectives: Although cyberbullying is becoming a more prevalent form of school-based violence, it is not clear whether parents are aware of how their children¡¯s smart phones and computers put them at risk. The purpose of this research was to explore the extent of parents¡¯ awareness of cyberbullying and their efforts to stop it.

Methods: The researcher surveyed 531 parents of school-aged children in Jeollabuk-do.

Results: Only 29.8% of parents were aware that cyberbullying was happening at their children¡¯s schools. Parents also had low awareness of the symptoms associated with both bullies and their victims.

Conclusions: It is important for parents to be digitally proficient, but this alone is not enough. Parents¡¯ prevention efforts are perhaps the most important factor in stopping cyberbullying,
